Recognizing Leroy & Liza Deines For Major Contribution

Back in January, in my role as the district foundation chair, I was looking at reports from The Rotary Foundation on the status of club donations to the Foundation by the various clubs in the district.  Imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw that someone in the Norton Rotary Club had donated over $35,000  to the Endowment Fund [former known as the Permanent Fund].
I contacted the Norton club president [Maggie Basgall] and club secretary [Jerry Moritz], but the donation was a surprise to them also.
I then emailed our contact at TRF and the mystery was solved.
Tonight we are recognizing a PDG and his wife for their generous support of TRF.  The late LeRoy Deines and Liza Deines were dedicated Rotarians whose commit to Rotary was recently demonstrated by their major gift to the Endowment Fund.  LeRoy passed away in 2003 at the early age of 65.  His wife Liza just passed away last July.  The realized gift from their estate was received by TRF in January of 2014.
I had a special fondness for LeRoy.  He was district governor the year I served as president of the Abilene Rotary Club, 1982-83.   I first met him at PETS training at Fort Hays State University in the spring of 1982.  Only in more recent years did I realize what a YOUNG district governor he was.  He served at the age 44.  Are there any PDGs in the room who know of an individual in District 5670 who served at a younger age?!
Twenty years later in 2002, I served as DG and when I made my official visit to the Norton Club, LeRoy and Liza were there in the front row to hear my speech, even though LeRoy was weakened from his struggle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.  He would pass away just 14 months later.  He was a fine gentleman and Liza was a great first lady for our district.
It is my privilege tonight to have our R.I. President’s Representative and DG Peggy present the Rotary Foundation major donor crystal to the sons of LeRoy and Liza.  David and Daniel Deines, would you please come forward.
On behalf of TRF we are very pleased to offer the official thanks of Rotary International for this generous support.  It should be noted that the annual earnings from this gift from your parents will be returned to Rotarians in District 5670 in our designated funds and will help us continue the good work of PDG LeRoy Deines.  Your mom and dad would be pleased with that and happy that you are here to receive this honor on their behalf.
Fellow Rotarians, please join me in recognizing LeRoy and Liza Deines.  True Rotarians!‚Äč  ~Mack Teasley
